Know your termite

Termites in North Indian homes

Almost all termite damage in Delhi NCR is caused by subterranean termites. They live in colonies in the soil and travel up into buildings through cracks in the floor, gaps around pipes and expansion joints, building thin mud tubes to stay hidden from light and air. Because the colony stays in the soil, spraying the wood you can see does not stop them; the soil under and around the building has to be treated.

Drywood termites are less common here. They live entirely inside dry wood such as furniture and frames, and leave small hard pellets rather than mud. They are treated in the wood itself.

Not every hole in wood is a termite. Fine powder and round pin holes, with no mud, usually mean wood borer, which needs a different treatment.

Warning signs

10 signs you may have termites

  • Thin mud tubes on walls, along skirting or behind cupboards
  • Door and window frames that sound hollow when tapped
  • Wooden skirting, cupboard backs or shelves that crumble
  • Paint that bubbles or cracks, with mud behind it
  • Swarms of winged insects near lights after the first rains
  • Piles of discarded wings on window sills
  • Damaged books, files or cardboard stored against walls
  • Doors and windows that suddenly stick
  • Mud lines along electrical conduits or plumbing
  • Soft or sagging spots in wooden flooring

Before and after

Preparing for treatment, and what comes next

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture about a foot away from the walls in the rooms to be treated.
  • Empty the lower shelves of wooden wardrobes on affected walls, and the cupboards under sinks.
  • Tell us where concealed pipes, wiring or underfloor heating run, and if you have marble or wooden flooring.
  • Keep children and pets out of rooms while we drill.

After treatment

  • Avoid wet-mopping along the sealed drill holes for a day.
  • Do not dig or re-lay soil along the outside wall where we have treated it.
  • Fix leaking pipes and damp walls: moisture attracts termites.
  • Keep wood, cartons and firewood off bare soil.
  • Call us if you see fresh mud tubes during the service period, so we can re-treat.
